Guide on Editing Canon C300 MXF videos in Avid Media Composer

Looking for a plugin or workflow to edit Canon C300 MXF videos in Avid Media Composer? This article will teach you how to convert Canon C300 MXF to DNxHD for Avid.

With every new camera, comes many new questions about workflow. I’ve been working with Canon C300 footage in Avid Media Composer for almost two years now so I thought it would be a good idea to share my established workflow and experiences.

A lot of Canon users mentioned that they encountered issue while using AMA plugin with Canon C300 MXF videos Avid Media Composer.

“I have some c300 footage here so I downloaded all the canon plugins but when I go to get the AMA for canon c300 it says its only for Avid MC5? How do I work with, import, AMA Link, c300 footage in Avid 8.2.2?”

To bring your Canon C300 footage into Media Composer, we are going to use the AMA function. This requires the latest Canon XF Plugin for Avid Media Composer, which is included in the installer above or can be downloaded here (click on Drivers & Software, and then chose your OS). Once these plugins are installed, you can launch Media Composer to begin the importing process. When you are in Media Composer, click on ‘AMA’ under settings. Open ‘AMA’, and click on Volume Mounting. Enable AMA Volume Management. Click ‘OK.’ Now you can link to the footage. To do so go to File -> Link to AMA Volume. This will open a finder window for you to locate the footage.

I’ve personally had success with 1080p/23.976 and 1080i/59.94. Last time I tried importing 1080p/24.00, AMA would not work. Finally, I chose to convert these Canon C300 MXF videos to DNxHD with a third party program-Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac.

Overall, the program is a professional app which allows for creation of MXF files with the Avid DNxHD codec under Mac OS X. It is free, clean and safe to install and use. With it, you can effortlessly transcode Canon/P2/Sony XDCAM MXF to edit in Avid Media Composer, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Final Cut Express and more without problems.
